Top 5 Best New Cars – Arriving in 2018

We have put our collective thoughts together to come up with our most anticipated 2019 Model Best New Cars arriving in Australia in 2018. There is no particular order. Anyone of these cars could park in our garage and we would be very happy!

1. Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon

Big news. After nearly 40 years of virtually no change for the cult status, G-Wagon is doing just that. Change is a happen’n but in a careful subtle way. Just enough to notice. The hard corners are ever so slightly softer.

Rigidity remains and in fact benefits from greater stiffness and toughness with the all-new ladder frame.

External visual change is subtle. Yet all that remains of the outgoing model is the spare-tire cover, door handles and headlight washers.

Size overall is larger but the weight is lighter.

Interior changes are subtle with the new Mercedes-Benz ethos evident but some traditional hallmarks like the passenger grab handle live on. The transition is happening by providing options like round instruments and a 12.3-inch nav display can now be an optional wide-screen gauge display.

Most controversial internal change – dual cup holders front and back. Gone are the days of the mesh bag drink holder.

Off-Road capability stays the same even with the shift to an independent front suspension making the round town drive more comfortable and quieter.

The twin-turbocharged 4.0liter V-8 remains but add the nine-speed automatic transmission from other recent Mercedes-Benz models and you will notice the quieter ride.

Last but not least there is now a G-Mode. Taking off-road to a new level.

What Mercedes-Benz has been able to achieve here with their iconic off-roader is nothing short of brilliant.

2.    Ford Ranger 2019 Raptor

The new-look more rugged Ranger sports the signature black grille and the BIG FORD badge.

A new 2.0-litre bi-turbo four-cylinder diesel engine that will outperform the current 3.2 –liter ‘five’.

10-speed automatic transmission delivering just the right amount of power when you need it fast.

The T6 ladder platform will underpin this truck.

Add coil-sprung multi-link rear-end, some big boy brakes and black 17-inch alloys and this truck is ready to look the part and perform.

Internally you get bolstered seats to hold you in place, the convenience of keyless entry and push-button start.

There is no pricing yet and we expect it may even nudge $90k but this race ready Ute seems to have all the adrenaline rush you could want in a truck.

Due in the third quarter of 2018.

3.  Jeep Pickup – Scrambler

Australian has been confirmed to receive the Jeep Pickup possibly to be called the Scrambler.

What do we know? Not a lot other than a few ‘spied shots ‘ but we are excited. Australian buyers love a Ute and there is a loyal Australian Wrangler following here.

It is thought it will come with the new 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 engine.

Like all Wranglers, it is anticipated it will be customisable.

Due now early 2019.

4.      BMW X2

First ever model. Initially, we thought, is there room to fit in another BMW model? But we are glad the decision makers at BMW thought so.

This sporty young thing just has something about it that makes you want one.

It is a small crossover SUV like the X1 but not. It seems more cohesive in its design and appeal.

Not sure why the makers want to label it a SAC or a Sports Activity Coupe we are unclear and concerned with the sound of that label! Main competitors in this market are the Mercedes-Benz GLA and Range Rover Evoque – all called small crossover SUV’s.

Arriving here in March, we think this will be a run-a-away success.

5.      Hyundai i30 N

The already popular i30 Hatch is about to launch into a new area of domination. The hot hatch market. Watch out.

Much has been said and written about this car by overseas and local writers all praising and extolling the virtues, the joy the brilliance of this hot hatch and we think they have got it right. We are not going to go into all the specs as there is so much written that a quick google search will give it to you in an instant.

Where we think it is going to run amuck amongst the hot hatch market is the price. The suggestion is it could be sub $40k. Golf GTI are you ready.

Hyundai boffins we applaud you.
